I'm losing it over this Holi (not holy) Spirit spread in Wallpaper Magazine's Reborn in India issue. If you know nothing at all about India, Hinduism or the Holi festival, you might, like me, be striken with a thirst for whatever it is these giddy models are drinking.
And for me, when viewed in the context of the Holi Spirit festival, these glossy, saturated and impeccably composed fashion photos become even more animated and enticing.
The Holi festival, also known as the festival of colors, is celebrated by Hindus in India on the last full moon of the lunar month Phalguna (February/March). The ebullient festival celebrates the beginning of Spring, fertility and the harvest. I haven't read them, but there are references to Hindu legends that associate Holi with the triumph of good over evil, as well. What this looks like in India is two days of enthusiastic release of inhibitions, where people chase and playfully splash brilliantly colored powder all over each other.
You can see images on line of what the streets of Delhi (and other cities) actually look like during Holi; the fashion shoot for Wallpaper magazine is merely inspired by those street scenes. I'd say that for the fashion shoot, the Holi festival and Wallpaper Magazine have mutually benefitted one another- one has gifted the other with rich, meaningful content and the other has reciprocated with a glamorous and contemporary rendition of that content.
Below these images I've embedded a link to watch behind the scenes video of the shoot. Enjoy!
