Today I stumbled upon the photographer Fernand Fonssagrives (1910 - 2003) by way of Alexey Brodovitch (1898 - 1971), who I have also just discovered today. Fernand was from France and known for his 'beauty photography'. He was also a dancer, along with his wife, the legendary model Lisa Fonssagrives. She is the subject of most of his photogaphs.
From Russia, Alexey Brodovitch was a photographer, graphic designer and renown Art Director of Bazaar Magazine from 1938-1958. Biased towards fine art, he invited his friends Man Ray, Marc Chagall and Jean Cocteau, among others, to contribute to the magazine.
Here is a selection of particularly stunning (to me) images, the first three are pages from Bazaar, which Man Ray and Alexey Brodovitch worked on together (Man Ray shot the photos and Brodovitch took care of the graphic design and layout). The next few are by Fernand Fonssagrives, hello, skin patterns!
